We are currently undertaking planning for a new education campus at Jindabyne, building a new primary and high school in the special activation precinct area.
The purpose-built campus will include a separate primary school and high school with modern facilities to support students, teachers and the community. In addition to new teaching and learning spaces, the primary and high schools will have new libraries, new halls, playing fields and open spaces.
Once complete, students and staff from the Jindabyne Central School will come together to form a new student population at the Jindabyne Education Campus. Once the transition is complete the existing school site will cease to operate.

Progress summary
TThe State Significant Development (SSD) application for the Jindabyne Education Campus has been granted approval by the Department of Planning and Environment (DPE). The Conditions of Approval can be found on the DPE major projects website.
Tenders for Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) and Main Works (MWO) have been released. The community will be updated when contractors have been confirmed.
Design and planning work for the new campus has been progressing in consultation with the Project Reference Group (PRG), which includes architects, planners and design professionals, and school and department leadership representatives.
We have also been working closely with TAFE NSW, Regional NSW and the Office of Sports and Recreation to contribute to the broader vision of the Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct.
The design process has revealed that additional transport and critical infrastructure is required within the Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct to enable the construction of the school. These enabling works include upgraded roads, shared pedestrian paths, sewer diversion works, and power and communications supply to connect the new site to Jindabyne.
We have submitted a Business Case Addendum to NSW Treasury for this additional infrastructure and are awaiting approval.
As a result, the program for delivery is being adjusted and the new school campus will not be completed for Day 1 Term 1 2023. This will allow for better alignment with the program for the overall Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct and for appropriate coordination with other precinct works.
We are now targeting early 2024 for the completion of the Jindabyne Education Campus.
We will announce a new opening date once the scope of the required enabling works has been confirmed and the SSD application has been approved.
Next steps
- Seeking approval to deliver additional critical infrastructure including shared pedestrian paths, upgraded roads, and sewer, power and communications for the new education campus.
- A builder will be appointed with the award of an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract.
- The builder will then develop the detailed design ahead of the start of construction.

Additional information
Frequently asked questions
What is the project delivering?
Planning is underway to build a new education campus for Jindabyne in the Special Activation Precinct (SAP), including a new primary school and a new high school. Once the transition is complete the existing school site will cease to operate.
The community will benefit from having modern education facilities, with innovative, sustainably designed learning spaces and the potential for joint community use. Both schools will have access to specialist learning spaces relating to the specific education pathways identified during consultation with school leadership and the community.
What will the schools provide?
The schools will be equipped with modern facilities and new learning spaces for the growing student communities at Jindabyne. The primary and high schools will have new libraries, new halls, playing fields and open spaces. What will happen to the current school site? The current central school site is part of the greater SAP masterplan and future use will be determined as part of that process. Once the new schools are built and fully operational, the existing site will be decommissioned.
What is a Special Activation Precinct (SAP)?
A Special Activation Precinct (SAP) is a dedicated area in a regional location identified by the NSW Government to become a thriving business hub. SAPs are unique to regional NSW and bring together planning and investment to focus on growing jobs and economic activity in an area.
For more information on the SAP please visit-

What is the Go Jindabyne Masterplan?
Go Jindabyne is a masterplan being prepared by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment to help grow the town into Australia's premier alpine destination aimed at making Jindabyne a great place to live, work and visit year-round.
For more information on the Go Jindabyne Masterplan please visit - https://www.planning.nsw.gov.au/gojindabyne
What will happen to the project at Jindabyne Central School?
The SAP and related investment means School Infrastructure NSW will assess how the current scope of the project will address the needs of the area alongside the broader future education picture.
School Infrastructure NSW will collaborate with other Government agencies to ensure feedback from the community, including the school, is obtained throughout the process.
How was this site selected?
A number of development options were considered, including continued use of the current school site. The options assessment process identified the Sport and Recreation precinct as the most suitable location for a new primary and high school for the Jindabyne community. The preferred site was chosen based on its suitability to support the current community needs, population forecasts and projected enrolment demand. Situated on the former golf course within the Sport and Recreation precinct, both schools will have the long term benefits of being adjacent to numerous sporting facilities, whilst having sufficient space for potential future expansion.
