Black Snake Facts

Also called black rat snakes or just rat snakes, black snakes are found throughout the Eastern and Central United States, as well as parts of Canada. Black snakes mate between May and June. In captivity, it is possible for these snakes to live up to 34 years. As their nickname implies, these snakes feed on rodents like rats and mice. However, black snakes will also eat lizards and frogs when they are young, and even birds. Black snakes kill their prey by strangulation, then swallow them whole.

Unless there are many snakes nesting together, you probably won’t need to take any action against these creatures. As their diet consists mainly of rodents like rats and mice, black snakes are great natural pest controllers. If you want them to leave the property, however, start by getting rid of their main food source — the rodents. Seal any entry points into the structure and keep grains stored where mice and rats can’t access them.

Black snakes are often found in barns or any place that rodents are also inhabiting. Black snakes can be spotted slithering through hay bales. Cool weather will send black snakes to retreat on top of heating ducts for warmth. You’ll also find large amounts of molten snakeskin lying around. A black snake’s molten skin is only approximately two feet long.

Black snakes are not venomous nor aggressive, but if threatened or cornered they may bite as a last resort. Black snakes are also excellent swimmers. The most intimidating feature of black snakes is their size as some can reach eight feet in length. Instinctually, black snakes will flee at the first sign of danger if given the chance.

Its defense mechanisms when forced include rattling their tails and emitting a musky odor to ward off predators. As a last resort, black snakes can bite. Black snakes are a common sight in places or locations where rodents thrive, including fields, barns, and sheds.
